SUMMARY
The springs of Krya, Trophonius, Easter: these are the images evoked by the name of the city of Lebadea. For most people, the history of the city is recent, unfolding in the Modern era, and is mainly associated with the 1821 Greek War of Independence. Few know that its history reaches back to Antiquity; some identify it as the city of Mideia, mentioned in Homer, but this has no archaeological support. The origins of the name are also enigmatic. Pausanias was the first to correlate Lebadea with Lebadus, king of Athens, a city on the shores of Lake Copais. |
