castellan
1. Castellanus (castle-keeper) was the governor of a feudal castle and the responsible for its maintenance. In addition, he had the prisoners in his guard.2. In Genoese colonies, the castellan was picked out among six candidates proposed to the Doge by the citizens of Genoa. The castellan had both political and judicial authority, he answered either to the city council or to the Doge. 2. A delegate official of a European state to its dominion in the Levant and Greece. He had political and judicial powers, and sometimes even military responsibilities.

Navarrese Company
The origins of the Company are somewhat obscure, but they are similar to those of the Catalan Company. Its mercenaries were used by Charles II of Navarre (1349- 1387) in his war against Charles V of France (1364- 1380). Following the signing of a peace treaty in 1366, and while the Company was in search of a new leader, they were used by James of Baux, titular claimant to the Latin throne of Constantinople and ruler of Achaea, when in 1380 he decided to conquer his possessions in Greece.
