SUMMARY
Coronea in antiquity was a rather isolated community situated on a prominent steep hill among ridges of the Mt. Helicon. It is mentioned in the Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad, however very few traces of its prehistoric past have been discovered so far. The fortifications point to a late Archaic-early Classical dating and apparently the city flourished until the late Hellenistic period. Archaeological findings attest that the community did not cease to exist throughout Late Antique, Byzantine and Frankish period, until the 14th century AD, when it seems to have been completely abandoned. |
