Numerous myths surround the city of Thebes, and part of this mythological tradition was magnificently articulated in Attic tragedy; these myths testify to the settlement’s leading role since prehistoric times, a city which over the centuries inspired authors and artists. In its long history, Thebes proved a number of times a worthy contender in the fight for pre-eminence in Greece: in the Classical period Thebes enjoyed a period of hegemony; it was the capital of the theme of Hellas, and then of Hellas and Peloponnesus in the Middle Byzantine period; it was the seat of the Duchy of Athens and Thebes in the period of Frankish rule; it was an important urban and financial centre in the Ottoman period; after the Greek War of Independence and the formation of the Greek Kingdom (1833), one of the first three courthouses established was at Thebes, and had jurisdiction over eastern Greece, including Athens and Euboea. |
