ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
In the second quarter of the 4th century Thebes started rising as a powerful force in central Greece, undertaking by force the leadership of the Boeotian Confederacy. Its rise was due to a series of charismatic leaders, notably Pelopidas and Epaminondas, who reorganized the army and developed the phalanx as a major battle force. The rise of Thebes was marked by the battle of Leuctra (371 BC), where Sparta was for the first time defeated; Sparta's complete humiliation occurred at the battle of Mantineia (364 BC), on Peloponnesian soil, following which all former subordinate cities of Sparta were liberated. Unfortunately, after the death of Pelopidas at the battle and Epaminondas' death two years later, Theban power started to decline. |
