ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
The ancient city of Mycalessus was situated in eastern Boeotia, and belonged to the territory of Tanagra during antiquity. It is placed in the area of modern Ritsona. The city controlled an area (chora) assessed as at least 50 and perhaps more than 100 km². The toponym is attested by Homer (Il. 2.498), although the area was already inhabited in the first half of the 3rd millennium BC. The city flourished as a polis during the Archaic and Classical period (6th-5th cent. BC), while after its destruction by the Thracian mercenaries of the Athenians in 413 BC, Mycalessus became a member of Tetracomia. |
