The area of Akraiphnio, called Akraiphnia, is located in northeastern Boeotia; it provides access to the Gulf of Euboea, while it also interconnects the North-South road network. It is an area rich in archaeological sites and monuments, mainly located on Mount Ptoon and the eastern part of Lake Kopais. Significant locations and sites include Glas, Akraiphnio or Akraiphia, and Kopai. In ancient times the famous Oracle of Apollo could be found in Mount Ptoon. In the Middle Ages the major settlements were Topolia and Karditsa, while the most prominent religious monuments were Hagios Georgios (St George) in Karditsa/Akraiphnio and the Monastery of Hagia Pelagia (St Pelagia) on Mount Ptoon/Pelagia. |
