The origins of the Company are somewhat obscure, but they are similar to those of the Catalan Company. Its mercenaries were used by Charles II of Navarre (1349- 1387) in his war against Charles V of France (1364- 1380). Following the signing of a peace treaty in 1366, and while the Company was in search of a new leader, they were used by James of Baux, titular claimant to the Latin throne of Constantinople and ruler of Achaea, when in 1380 he decided to conquer his possessions in Greece.
