Mosaic flooring flourished in Boeotia in the first half of the fifth century until the mid-sixth century, a period of peace and economic prosperity. The first preference for geometric decoration was enriched with iconographic elements from the animal and vegetable world, from the mid-fifth century. Towards the end of the century and in the first half of the next one, there is an increase of anthropomorphic representations with sometimes symbolic character.

In Boeotia the oldest dated example of monumental painting is placed chronologically at the end of the 10th century in the monastery of Hosios Loukas, which up until the end of the 12th c. was adorned with superb works of art, influenced from Constantinople. The mural paintings in Thebes and Orchomenos were of an excellent quality. In the period of Frankish occupation links with new artistic centers are observed. The church of St. Nicolas lies at the rural region of Kampia in Boeotia, around 10 km northwest of the village of Dionysos in the Municipality of Orchomenos. One of the most important monuments of Boeotia and one of the most original works of the so-called «Helladic School» of Middle Byzantine religious architecture, dated to the second quarter of the 12th century according to the prevailing view.
