Panakton was a classical and early Hellenistic garrison fort maintained by Athenians on the frontier with Boeotia. The site has levels of prehistoric occupation, and undisturbed remains of a Late Byzantine village below the tower on the summit. Attractive for its defensible, mountaintop location, Panakton was the most substantial settlement in the area of the Skourta plain (Dervenochoria) in the periods of its occupation.

Defensive architecture in Boeotia involves fortified towns (whose fortifications often use ancient or early Byzantine works), castles built mostly during the Frankish and Catalan occupation, a large number of towers and fortified monasteries. The already existing research is insufficient and a large number of monuments remains unearthed or has been destroyed.
